Storing a Collection

Why is Proper Storage Important?
Proper storage of coins is necessary in order to maintain the integrity of your collection. Prolonged exposure to moisture, chemicals, or other elements, such as PVC, can permanently damage your coins. In addition, the value of your collection is determined primarily by the condition of that collection. Protecting your investment is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, deciding how to protect your collection can be be tricky and confusing. Therefore, we have provided you with the various storage options available and listed the pros and cons of each in the next section. For these items and more, don't forget to check out our supply store.

PVC damage (left) can be prevented through the use of 2x2 cardboard mylar holders (right).

Storage Options
The cheapest, and perhaps most efficient, method of storage is 2x2 cardboard mylar holders ($4.00/100). These holders are PVC-free and will easily fit into appropriately-sized boxes or specially-designed pages for three-ring binders. While these are not air tight, they do offer ample protection. If stored in a humid environment for a long enough period of time, the cardboard will become discolored and will need to be replaced. Routine replacement should occur every three to four years.

If you have hundreds of loose coins, you might want to consider using tubes (~$0.50/each) to store them. Usually made of hard, non-corrosive plastic, tubes are very durable and allow you store a large amount of coins in a confined space. However, tubes do not protect coins from coming in contact with each other or from atmospheric elements. Tubes should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Coin folders are another storage option for collectors. These folders offer easy portability and organization, but some inexpensive versions (Whitman and Harris - $3.00/each) do not protect against air and moisture. Therefore, they are not recommended for long-term storage, but are great starting items for novice collectors. For complete protection, consider Dansco-brand albums ($20.00+/each).

These last two items are designed for individual coins that may be of particular value or that will be displayed. Airtite holders ($1.25/each) come with or without rings and securely fit over a coin to provide complete protection from all elements. Snaptite holders ($0.75/each) are similar to Airtite holders, but are not available for all coins.
